Alternative Spring Break in its Thirteenth Iteration At Emerson

Alternative Spring Break(ASB) is a unique year-long service learning and leadership program that culminates in a week-long service immersion experience during spring break week. Students gain leadership skills, organize and participate in community engagement projects, and have meaningful interactions with community members that challenge them to increase their social justice
consciousness. This year’s program, in its thirteenth iteration at Emerson, will educate students through hands-on community engagement about the challenges faced by immigrants to the US, and community responses to those challenges. Emerson ASB, a flagship program of the Office of Academic Engagement and Community Action, is hosting programs at two sites this year: El Paso, Texas and Boston.

The El Paso program offers students the opportunity to better understand the issue of immigration in US border communities. Additionally, through this border immersion experience that emphasizes both learning and service to the community, students will develop the knowledge and consciousness to make a positive impact in their community upon return. The Boston ASB program offers all students, staff, faculty, and alums the opportunity to engage for as much time as they can offer. This program provides participants the opportunity to increase awareness around issues facing immigrant communities through service with local immigrant support organizations, and the chance to serve alongside Emersonians they might not encounter otherwise.
