Jumpstart is a national organization that focuses on improving the reading and writing skills of preschool aged children through the work of dedicated college students and community members. Recent studies show that children living in low-income communities are as much as 60% behind their peers who live in more affluent areas even before beginning kindergarten. Jumpstart works to close this achievement gap.
Jumpstart at Emerson College is comprised of fifty students who serve 300 hours for one program year in classrooms and family childcare centers around the Boston community, including Roxbury, Dorchester, and South Boston. Emerson students work with small groups of partner children in teams within the bigger corps of the Jumpstart program.
Students are still needed for the 2016 spring semester. Once 300 hours of service are completed, Corps members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award and join a large network of AmeriCorps members nationwide.
